David O’Carroll from Ballagh Micro Farm in Devon gave an inspired talk about the subject and how significant it is in his life that I got hooked straight away. It is based on the idea that to be healthy and productive plants need healthy and productive soils teeming with healthy and productive Indigenous Micro Organisms (IMOs). These are freely available in our ancient and wild areas of Britain in the forest floors for instance in ancient woodlands (yet another reason for preserving these threatened areas). However they need feeding to enable them to thrive and produce habitats for many other micro organisms as well as plants. So to enable them to do their work and to help feed the plants there is a set of 14 edible formulae that can be made cheaply and at home in order to condition and feed the soil and plants. And these can also be used to feed and condition humans!

David is energetic and passionate about his subject. He seems to know it very well. He is also passionate about zero waste and has designed his farm to have no waste, everything is used. He has a well structured set of presentation materials and can put across a quite comprehensive system well. He seems humble and sharing, his main aim being to get this out there so more of us can do it.
